U7’s visit Kingsholm

U7's

On 27th February Tewkesbury U7’s went to Gloucester Rugby Club for a tour of their club and a bit of coaching from the professionals.
We visited the changing rooms where all the big game plans take place and we saw all the players rugby kits hung up, nice and clean ready for the players.
Just before the game started we did a pitch parade with all the fans cheering and then we made a tunnel for the players to run out on to the pitch.
We then watched Gloucester beat Newcastle Falcons 32-6.
The kids had an amazing time and were totally mesmerised by the whole experience.

The junior section of the club are pleased to have widened its local schools engagement program through enhancing its relationship with Bredon School.

Based in Bushley Bredon School is a mainstream day and boarding school for boys and girls of all abilities from 3 to 18 years olds and has a specialism for helping children with dyslexia, dyspraxia and a range of associated learning needs achieve their potential in a thriving learning environment.

The relationship has developed on two fronts.

From a playing perspective pupils from Bredon School have been training with Girls U18, 15 and 13 squads with successful debuts post Christmas in U18 and U15s along with male pupils commencing training with the U16 squad. Further player engagement at a junior level to increase as well as coaching support from TRFC to the school.

The Junior Section of TRFC and Bredonschool are also exploring opportunities to partner on a wider basis to share resources, facilities and for mutual promotion.

The club would like to extend its thanks to Charmain Eaton who works at the school and plays for Tewkesbury Ladies for nurturing the relationship and David Ward the Head Master.  David has played professionally at Bedford and Nottingham as well as representing England at Colts, Students and U23.  David is an advocate of engaging the school with the community and in particular with TRFC.

We hope to bring further news of developments in future newsletters.

Successful Season for U9s

U9s-2015-16

The U9s had a strong showing at the recent County Cup competition.  With a large squad three teams were entered that, unlike the majority of other clubs, were unseeded, and all competed strongly.

All three teams showed great skill and determination within their groups which were fiercely fought.  Narrowly missing out on the play offs for finals day the squad enjoyed the day as a whole offering mutual support for each other’s games throughout the day.
The season as a whole has seen the the squad grow and players within it develop new skills and increased teamwork progressing from tag to contact rugby with relative ease.  On match days the emphasise has been to develop skill and enjoy rugby which has resulted mainly in positive results playing opposition teams home and away.
A predominant part of the U9s season has again been the strong parental and family support at training, match days and on social events.  The coaches would like to take this opportunity to express their thanks for this continued support

U18 Girls v Wellington RFC

In a fiercely contested cup encounter Tewkesbury were narrowly edged in the final minutes of a thrilling game to a 19-24 defeat by Wellington.

Starting the game strongly with a converted breakaway try Tewkesbury were dominant in the set plays and fluent with ball in hand. Reduced to 14 players through a sin bin decision late in the first half Tewkesbury were resolute in defending their try line to go into the break with a narrow lead.

The second half started brightly with both sides looking to gain the upper hand. A harsh decision early in the half reduced Tewkesbury to 14 players for the remainder of the game. However with forward dominance in the set piece continuing Tewkesbury extended their lead. Entering the final five minutes behind Wellington secured a fine breakaway try to narrow the gap. With minutes remaining of the tight contest Wellington again broke free scoring a second late try to secure the win by five points at the death.

U12s V Malvern

U12s V Malvern

After a very funny week of weather Tewkesbury tigers under 12’s hosted a very strong team from over the boarder , Malvern under 12’s , this was not going to be easy as these as we know can be a very tricky side and are usually good in the backs .
first period.
Tewkesbury tigers under 12’s opted to receive the ball from kick off , from the off Tewkesbury went at Malvern with every thing they had and to be fair the forwards and backs really looked good playing well and winning every thing from the break downs to open play . This created space out wide for Ben Peters to show what he’s made of and go over for the opening try , converted by Charlie Kendrick 7-0 . Next up after more good work from the forwards and with Charlie ,Henry and Sean working well together Brendan lewellyn crossed the line and again Charlie Kendrick stepped up and kicked the extras 14-0 . Then from the kick off Ben Peters caught the ball stepped the on coming Malvern defense and used his pace and skill to weave his way up the field to score in the corner , harder kick but again Charlie Kendrick slotted the extras period ended 21-0 .

2nd period
Tewkesbury made several changes , which whilst trying to settle gave Malvern a chance to get back in to the game and get a foot hold , this allowed them to cross the line themselves twice but both times there kicker missed , Tewkesbury never settled into this period and it ended 0-10 but 21-10 over all .

3rd period .
Tewkesbury made more changes whilst Malvern stuck again with a settled side , Tewkesbury’s side again found it hard to get the intensity back in this period that they had in the first period but after some sustained pressure Charlie Kendrick picked and drove over the line from a few yards out then converted his own try . Period ended 7-0 and 28-10 over all .

4th period .
Tewkesbury now fully in controll made more changes . Tewkesbury this time started to really go at Malvern but while they pressured Malvern near there line and with ball at the back of a ruck lost control for Malverns speedster and probably best player picked it up and broke away to score under the posts conversion missed . Tewkesbury then went at Malvern but could not cross the line them selves this period and it ended 0-5 and 28-15 over all .

I’d like to say that the backs looked really good today and the forwards played great .
